Wetwall Panels vs Tiling vs DIY-Fitted Boards
| What matters | Wetwall panels (fitted by us) | Traditional tiling | DIY or generic fitted boards |
|---|---|---|---|
| Installation time and mess | Often days, can go over an existing sound surface, minimal dust | Days to weeks, full strip-out plus grout curing time | Similar speed but rarely includes proper tanking behind the boards |
| Water-tightness | Sealed joints fitted by tradespeople working to NVQ2 plumbing standard | Depends on grout condition, which degrades and cracks over time | Depends entirely on the sealant used and how it's applied |
| Guarantee | 5-year labour and installation guarantee, 2-year on the panels | Varies by tiler, rarely put in writing | Rarely offered, especially on DIY work |
| Who's in your home | One in-house team, one project point of contact | Often just the tiler, other trades brought in separately if needed | Usually one fitter with no backup trade if a problem is found mid-job |
| Typical cost, standard bathroom | Around £4,500-£5,500 fitted, mid-range finish | Similar or higher once materials, adhesive and grouting labour are added up | Lower upfront but no professional prep or guarantee behind it |
What Happens Behind Your Old Tiles Before the Panels Go Up
Strip the old tiles off a Derby bathroom wall and you don't always find a flat, dry surface waiting underneath. In a lot of the Victorian and Edwardian terraces around the city, and in the older stone-built cottages along the Derwent Valley corridor, it's common to find uneven render, a patch gone soft with damp, or years of tile adhesive built up in ridges once the old covering comes off. That's the point where a Wetwall job either goes smoothly or stalls, because the panels need a flat, sound base to sit against or the joints won't seal properly and the finish will show every dip once the light catches it. Our own plastering team, who between them carry around 40 years' combined experience, deal with that kind of repair as part of the same visit rather than you waiting on a separate trade to be booked in around us. That's one reason we keep every trade -- fitters, plasterers, plumbers -- vetted personally and in-house rather than bringing in whoever happens to be free that week. Once the panels are up, the work is backed by a 5-year guarantee on labour and installation and a 2-year guarantee on the panels themselves, we're a member of the Construction Industry Training Board, and the old tiles and offcuts leave with a licensed waste carrier rather than sitting in a skip on your drive. If you'd like to hear from someone we've fitted a Wetwall bathroom for before, genuine customer references are available on request.
Derby and Derbyshire: Where Our Wetwall Fitters Work
Most of our Wetwall work is within Derby itself, and a good share of it starts with en-suite or shower-room jobs in Cathedral Quarter apartments and other DE1 conversions, where fitting panels over an existing surface keeps dust and disruption to a minimum in a shared building. Family bathrooms make up much of the rest, out toward Allestree, Darley Abbey and Mickleover near Markeaton Park and Darley Park, and through the Spondon, Alvaston and Chellaston commuter belt around Pride Park. Further out, in the older stone-built terraces and cottages along the Derwent Valley Mills corridor through Belper and the surrounding villages, it's common to find a wall behind the old tiles that needs a plastering repair before panels can go on -- something our own plasterers handle on the same job rather than a separate trade needing to be booked in. We also cover Long Eaton, Ilkeston, Heanor, Ripley, Alfreton, Swadlincote and Burton on Trent, and take on Wetwall installations further into the Peak District around Matlock, Bakewell and Ashbourne, plus Nottingham and Sheffield by arrangement.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Wetwall Bathroom?
A Wetwall bathroom is a modern alternative to traditional tiled bathrooms, featuring high-quality waterproof wall panels that create a seamless, grout-free, and watertight environment. These panels are specifically designed to protect against moisture penetration , effectively preventing the growth of mould, mildew, and damp-related issues . Unlike conventional tiles that rely on grout, which can become porous and prone to staining , Wetwall panels are crafted from non-porous materials such as acrylic, PVC, or high-pressure laminate . This ensures that water simply runs off the surface, preventing leaks and maintaining a clean, fresh, and hygienic bathroom space with minimal upkeep.
How Do Wetwall Panels Work?
Advanced waterproof technology – Wetwall panels are designed using non-porous, water-resistant materials that completely block water absorption, reducing the risk of damage over time. Large-format panels – Compared to traditional tiles, these panels are much larger, resulting in fewer joints and seams where moisture could seep in. This enhances durability and makes cleaning effortless. Quick and easy installation – Wetwall panels can be installed directly over existing surfaces , eliminating the need for extensive preparation work and cutting down on both labour costs and time.

Full Bathroom Walls – For a clean, contemporary look that enhances the entire space.
